- George graduated from Lee Edwards High School in Asheville, NC. In 1957, he received a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State College and a commission in the Air Force. After serving three years in the Air Force, George did two years in graduate work at Yale in City Planning and Highway Engineering and worked four years in a transportation planning unit of the New York State Department of Public Works. Since 1966 he has been a lecturer in City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After obtaining his PhD in City Planning at UNC - Chapel Hill, Georege worked as a private consulant in the field of transportation planning for a number of years. In 1984, he moved to Charlotte, NC, to work as Deputy Director of the City of Charlotte's Department of Transporation, where he remained until his retirement in 2001. George was active for many years in the National Transportation Research Board.
